Project Needlemouse Finally Unveiled

by: “Tiger” Oliver

The announcement has been made:  SEGA has given “Project Needlemouse” an official name and website: Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. A trailer for the game has been released on GameSpot.

This marks the newest game in the original Sonic the Hedgehog series since Sonic 3 in 1994.

After watching the trailer, I was left with a sweet taste in my mouth. This is the first Sonic game in a very long time that I am looking forward to actually buying before I play.

Now, there have been some people complaining about the homing attack being integrated into Sonic 4‘s gameplay and the entire feel of the game, saying that it just looks too slow. In response to that, I have to say that it looks no slower than the original Sonic the Hedgehog. In fact, I’m willing to believe that I know pretty much how it’ll play and handle. If you have a Sega Genesis emulator (preferably with Sega CD support, like Gens Plus), check out Sonic MegaMix, a completely remixed version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and play as Sonic. Take his control scheme and abilities and you’ll have a rough idea of what I’m talking about.

As far as the speed’s concerned, it is nowhere near as fast as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but is somewhere along the lines of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 3, leaning more towards the original.

The cool thing about Sonic 4 is this: they debuted just the first episode. They’re planning future sequels to this game, which makes this set even better on my stomach. Now, here’s the problem with that: if this ends up like the Star Wars prequels, it could completely undermine the whole concept of the episonic release. The thing I’m hoping for: that they’ll release so any episodes that they’ll break down and release the entire Sonic 4 game on disc.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is slated for release on all three major consoles sometime this year.
