UPDATE: Project Needlemouse

by – “Tiger” Oliver

Well, it looks like we’ve finally had one of our prayers answered when it comes down to the next Sonic game.

It was revealed last week that good ol’ Sonic is the only playable character in the game known only as Project: Needlemouse.

Now, this poses a serious question: will this be just a 2D version of a 3D game (i.e. storyline, plot, etc.), or a full reincarnation of the classic gameplay that we’ve come to love?

Personally, as long as it’s as beautiful as this:

…I think we’ve a look to look forward to.

There’s a few givens that I think are already pretty much dang-near-guaranteed to be in this new Sonic game:

1. There willbe a Super Sonic, and you will probably have to get all seven Chao Emeralds to achieve him.
2. The first level will be some sort of island paradise ala Green Hill Zone, Emerald Hill Zone or Act 1 of Angel Island Zone.
3. Some reincarnation of classic Sonic jingles.
4. Robotnik’s… oh, excuse me youngun’s… EGGMAN‘s boss battles are actually going to be fun again.
5. It will probably be as long as Sonic 3 & Knuckles, or somewhere between there and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in terms of level size and amount of levels, respectively.
6. Finally, we will all be happy that we don’t have to save that little pink puffball in our backsides, Amy Rose.

Granted, the physics may not be just like what those like me who’ve been around since day one of the franchise would like it, but if it’s anything remotely near the original Sonic games on the Genesis, this may be the saving grace of a dying franchise.

  1. I am kind of disappointed that we won’t get to play as “Sonic’s new friend Mr. Needlemouse” though.

  2. Yeah, but with the way people have complained about the bestiality references in the next gen “Sonic the Hedgehog”, the unneeded ‘edge’ in “Shadow the Hedgehog” and that whole werehog thing (o_O); the last thing the series needs is a character that sounds like a crack addict, that way Venezuela can at least have Sonic left alone.
