Project Needlemouse

Without a doubt, it’s make-or-break time for Sonic Team.

On Sept. 8, 2009, SEGA announced “Project Needlemouse”, a brand new sidescrolling Sonic game reminescent of the original 2-D classics. Outside of that, not much has been announced about it except that it will be released some time this year, will be in high-definition and that it will most likely end up being released on XBox Live & the Playstation Network, no word yet about availability on the Wii Shop.

Many people have been speculating about who will be featured in the game, whether it will be a high-def remake of past Sonic games and if it’s even a game at all, fostering rumors of a new Sega console over the horizon.

On the official Sega of America blog, they’re currently cutting potential characters in the game. Surprisingly, Tails and Knuckles didn’t even make the list. While some are guessing that they’re automatically in the game, I believe this could mean that they’re either remaking the original Sonic the Hedgehog or doing something similar to it in the sense of being merely Sonic-centric.

Regardless of what Sega has up their sleeve, if “Project Needlemouse” fails like Sonic the Hedgehog (Next Gen) or is as lackluster as many of the blue blur’s last outings, it could spell the end of one of the most recognizable video game franchises. I’ll even go as far as saying it has to be “Game of the Year” material to breath life into Sega’s flagship series.

Then again, maybe it’s really a new console that’s due out? Not likely. Rumors had been flying around that Sega would use their RingEdge arcade technology in a new console or AS a new console (similar to how they made the Dreamcast over ten years ago). However, Sega seems to be shifting more to the internet now, having opening PlaySEGA, where you can go online and play classic Sega games and even create Sonic levels legally – for a monthly fee, of course.

In the end, we’ll have to wait and see how “Project Needlemouse” plays out. But, for the world’s most famous hedgehog’s sake, it had better exceed everybody’s expectations.

  1. Hey, it came out that Sonic is in fact the only playable character. Sounds good so far.
