Fall ’09 Reviews in Brief

By – “Tiger” Oliver

I’ve played a plethora of games this year, but I never got around to review a few of them. Some were good, some were decent, some made me want to shove ice picks through my eye sockets. So, here’s a brief look at a small few of those games:

Saw: The Video Game (PC, PlayStation 3, XBox 360)
Set some time after the events of the first Saw movie, you play as David Tapp trying to survive Jigsaw’s game. While the ingenious traps,  a pretty good story (which has always attracted me to the Saw series, instead of the traps) and decent sound, this game doesn’t have a lot going for it. Horrible graphics, awkward controls and animations that look copied from a bad PlayStation One game haunt Saw: The Video Game. It felt like a Saw game and sounded like a Saw game, but it didn’t look or play like a Saw game should be. A huge disappointment, considering how far they could have ran with it. By far the worst game I’ve played all year, besides Sonic the Hedgehog for XBox 360.

Gameplay – 2/5
Graphics – 1/5
Sound – 3/5
Controls – 1/5
Replay Value – 1/5
Overall – 1.5/5

Buy – No
Rent – No

Sonic Unleashed (Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)
Good news, this is light years ahead of that damned embarrassment known as Sonic the Hedgehog (PS3/XBox 360). The controls are better, you only play as sonic, the graphics are stunning and the music has been toned down from the face-melting guitar riffs from previous 3D Sonic titles.

The bad news… where do I start? First, the obvious – a werehog? SRSLY? The best thing you can come up with is a werehog? Granted, this is meant for younger gamers, but a werehog?

The rest of the bad news: there’s this creature from the mind of Dr. Seuss following you around like Navi from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that’s creepy as all get out, the storyline’s actually a step down from the previous Sonic game and, worst of all, the feel of the game map and continents seem like a PSA for world peace and political correctness.

Apart from all of that, this game is actually playable and will have to do until Sega actually gets their crap together and makes a decent Sonic game.

Gameplay – 3/5
Graphics – 4/5
Sound – 3/5
Controls – 3/5
Replay Value – 2/5
Overall – 3/5

Buy – Only for children or when price goes down
Rent – Yes

Left 4 Dead (PC, XBox 360)

Sure, Left 4 Dead 2 is out, but the original’s just as amazing. If you’ve got a PC or XBox 360 and can’t get a hold of L4D II, the original L4D will surely curb your hunger until you can get the new installment.

Gameplay – 4/5
Graphics – 4/5
Sound – 4/5
Controls – 5/5
Replay Value – 4/5
Overall – 4/5

Buy – Yes
Rent – Yes

And, finally…

Pong (Arcade)
The ultimate (and first) video game. Pong has THE best graphics, sound and gameplay of any game. Albeit, the controls suck, but a price to pay for awesomeness.

Gameplay -5/5
Graphics – 5/5
Sound – 5/5
Controls – 1/5
Replay Value – 5/5
Overall – 4/5

Buy – Yes… if you can find a working machine
Rent – Wai- you can still rent this awesome game?!

And, with that little bit of sarcasm, I’d like to thank you for reading the blog this semester, and I hope you’ll continue reading it over break and next semester as well.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Good Yule and a very merry whatever-you-celebrate-during-late-December.
