Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 trailer

Posted by Hans Wuerflein

A new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 trailer debuted tonight online and during NBC’s Sunday Night Football game between the Chargers and Steelers.  It’s good to see them taking the marketing seriously, but from the sound of things it’s on track to be one of the best selling games of all time already.

And with good reason.  For those not aware of how the Call of Duty franchise has been handled by its publisher, Activision, in recent years, this is only the 4th real Call of Duty game.  After Call of Duty 2, Activision wanted to “exploit” (their word) certain franchises to boost up the company (see the four Guitar Hero games that have come out this year).

Part of the plan was to make certain franchises annual, whether the developer that actually made them successful, in this case Infinity Ward, had time to make a sequel or not.  So, you get Call of Duty 3, not a bad game by any means, but something was just… different.

Then, after Infinity Ward gave themselves the time they needed to make a worthy sequel, you got the first Modern Warfare, a huge success both critically and commercially that even eclipsed Halo 3 with the number of people playing it on Xbox Live for a time, not to mention having quite possibly the greatest single player experience ever in a first person shooter.

And it was made clear, however subtly, in the PC version (in my opinion the definitive way to play the series if you have a good enough system) how they felt about the annual publishing schedule.  All the files for the game are labeled “IW3” instead of Call of Duty 4.

But Activision wasn’t happy having a multi-million seller every other year, so they released the Treyarch developed Call of Duty: World at War.  Again good game on its own, but it just wasn’t the same.  They also sent it back to World War II after Infinity Ward had made it a point to move the franchise forward.  It was still successful, largely due to the name and Treyarch being smart enough to pretty much just swap the weapons and make a few new maps for the multiplayer.

But now we get the true sequel, in name, developer and story.  They haven’t been releasing a lot of details about the story, but they’ve said that it will be a continuation of events in the first Modern Warfare.  I’ll be playing through the original again and grabbing this on day one.
